School Rules

These are the rules Gino*bleep* City has as part of its elementary school English curriculum.  Like it or not, I have to teach them.  Fortunately, I agree with most of them.

Listen carefully!

This one’s not bad.

Mistakes are OK!

Mistakes are OK? Sure, I guess…but only when you don’t make the same ones again and again.

Good job!

Nice sentiment, but how is that even a rule?!

Eye contact please!

Now here’s a good one that many Japanese, kids and adults alike, really need to work on.

Don't be shy!

This one is good too.  Even if you can’t do it, pretend like you can, and your Japanese homeroom teacher probably won’t know the difference.

Speak and sing LOUDER!

What I want to know is, does a kid who already sings as loud as my Uncle Brian, who has no need for a mic when he goes karaoke, still need to obey this rule?  If so, the first rule is going to be a hard one to follow when everybody gets older.
