In memory of the Hawaiians who didn’t make it

hula-girl-2kai-clayAs a sculptor I pride myself on being able to sculpt anything, be it human, animal, or miniature replica of a video game console.  However, my biggest challenge lies in getting human characters and other tall, skinny, top-heavy sculptures to stand up.  Sometimes my incompetence in this area results in the sculpture’s feet being way too big, or in the sculpture leaning one way or the other.  Other times it results in the sculpture falling down and fracturing into a thousand pieces in the kiln (as in the case of the surfer dude on the right) or falling off the table while I was away from the studio for half an hour eating my dinner (as in the case of the hula girl on the left).  Luckily, in each of these instances I was able to resist the urge to bash my head against the wall in frustration, and vented in my Xanga blog instead.  More fortunately still, I foresaw what was coming and took pictures of my people before they died.
